Summary
In Psalm 19, God starts a conversation with His people. He is a Father who speaks to us so that we’ll learn how to speak back to Him. God speaks to us through both His works (creation) and His words (Scripture). Growing to maturity means speaking back to God in these same ways, with the words of our mouths—guided by His own words and in faithful work—modeled after His own work.
Discussion/Reflection Q’s
-The fact that God communicates His truth in both words and works invites us to reflect on the alignment of our own words and works. What God says and what God does come together into one glorious, consistent message. How about our words and works? Does your life line up with your lips?
-Verses 1-4 teach us that God’s world is His word to everyone who inhabits it. Warm sunshine, gentle breezes, and rich food communicate His kindness. Sprawling mountains, raging seas, and high winds communicate His power. Do you slow down enough to listen to God’s voice in creation? 1 Timothy 4:4 says that “everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving…” Slow dinner down. Slow down your walk at the park. Slow down your conversations with your kids. Slow down intimacy with your spouse. Work on receiving the goodness of God’s creation thoughtfully and listen for His voice in your experience of His world.
-David’s response to seeing and hearing from God in creation and Scripture is confession (v12-13). God’s Word confronts and exposes us, but instead of hiding from or avoiding that, we should embrace it because God never exposes us to shame us. He exposes us to transform us. And the same Word that exposes also transforms. Are there any areas of your life where you resist exposure for fear of shame? What would it look like to stop hiding and trust that God will be gracious to you?

Big Idea: Creation and Scripture help us to see and hear from God, and seeing God helps us see ourselves.

-What does creation tell us about God?
-What additional details does Scripture give us?
-What do these truths tell us about ourselves?
-How can we work with God to become more like Him?
