Epiphany Week 2 - How to See Epiphany

Updated: Jan 12

Scripture

Luke 2:25–38 (With special attention to verse 32 “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”)

Big Idea (For Parents)

Simeon and Anna recognize Jesus because the Spirit has trained their eyes over time.

Their proximity to God’s Word and people has formed and fitted them for an epiphany—when revelation came, they were ready.

Their faithfulness didn’t earn them special revelation, but it did welcome the Spirit’s work. And what the Spirit enables Simeon to see is not only who Jesus is, but who He is for.

Family Reflection

(Read aloud or summarize)

When Simeon sees Jesus, Luke tells us that the Spirit is at work. The Spirit has been guiding him. The Spirit has been teaching him how to wait. The Spirit brings him into the temple at just the right moment.

But Simeon has not been passive. He has been waiting for God’s promises. He has been living close to God’s Word. He has been hoping for a long time. So when the Light finally appears, Simeon recognizes Him immediately.

And what does Simeon see? Not only the glory of Israel— but “a light for revelation to the Gentiles.” Epiphany teaches us that the Spirit trains our eyes so that we can see more than just how the light affects us—He helps us see how far God’s light is meant to travel.

Discussion Questions

(Choose 1–2)

-What does Simeon say the child Jesus will be a light for?

-Why do you think God helped Simeon see this so clearly?

-How do waiting and prayer help us notice what God is doing?

-Who are some people today who still need to see God’s light?

Practice — Learning to Look with the Spirit

This week, we practice the kind of faithfulness that helps us see clearly.

-Practice Faithful ProximitySpend a few extra unhurried minutes with Scripture or prayer together this week—no rushing, no multitasking.

-Practice Mission-Minded LookingAt the end of the week, ask together:Where might God be shining His light beyond our family—into other people’s lives?

Carrying the Foundation Forward

(Seasonal tether)

This is what it looks like when the Light goes public—and faithful people are trained to recognize how far it reaches.
