Easter Week 5 - Meeting the Need

Scripture Reading

John 21:1-14

Big Idea (For Parents)

This story demonstrates our resurrected Christ’s commitment to meet all our needs as we simply hear and obey him. It figuratively foreshadows Christ’s provision for his disciples’ ministry as fishers of men gathering all “gentile fish” nations into the church, but it does so through a very true, non-figurative account of Jesus providing for their basic human need of hunger. Because he really provided breakfast, they could trust he would really provide everything needed to disciple the nations and bring the fullness of the kingdom in which all needs would be more fully met they than they could ever ask or imagine.

Family Reflection

(Read aloud or summarize)

Peter and the other disciples already knew that Jesus was raised from the dead and that made them very happy (John 20:5, 25). Even so, they still had lots of hard work to do. Sometimes, it seemed like their work wasn’t producing any good results to meet their and others’ needs, like when they fished all night and caught nothing (John 21:3-5). Easter season is about joyfully resting in Jesus’ resurrection victory, but when we have unmet needs, it is hard to rest.

This story shows us that when we simply hear and obey Jesus, he will ultimately provide for all the needs of his people according to his good plan.

Discussion Questions

(Adjust for age)

1- Peter and the disciples were hungry, so Jesus met their need by giving them breakfast. What is one way Jesus has met your needs this week?

2- What is one ongoing need you have that you could ask Jesus to meet this week?

3- What is one ongoing need that someone in the church has that Jesus could use you to help meet this week?

Practice—Sabbath Rest through Met Needs

Sabbath rest involves receiving God’s provision to meet our needs.

-Prayerfully identify one person in the church who has a felt need that you could help to tangibly meet. Let Christ use you as his body to help meet that need this week.

-Identify one of your own felt needs individually or as a family, and pray together for Christ to meet it as you simply hear and obey him.
