Scripture Reading
Luke 24:13-34
Big Idea (For Parents)
Sometimes what can be hard to understand or accept as spoken words becomes much clearer when we experience Jesus provide for a very physical need. In a mouthful of delicious, satisfying bread we can savor that which we often otherwise struggle to believe—Jesus has won, and he really does provide for my every need. I can rest in him. (v.21, 30-31).
Family Reflection
(Read aloud or summarize)
Jesus’ resurrection shows that he has overcome everything bad and everything sad and thereby meets our every need (v.21). Since we don’t see this as fully now as we one day will, it can hard to understand or accept when proclaimed only by words. Therefore, Jesus proclaims it also in a meal (v.30; cf. 1 Corinthians 11:26). We see this illustrated in this story, as Jesus had already fully explained his wonderful victory to his disciples on the road, but it was only in a meal that “their eyes were opened”—it all clicked—and they more fully experienced the joy-filled truths he had already explained.
So for us too, in a mouthful of delicious, satisfying bread (or another of our favorite foods) we can savor that which we often otherwise struggle to believe—Jesus has won, and he really does provide for my every need. I can rest in him. (v.21, 30-31).
Discussion Questions
(Adjust for age)
1- God both tells he loves us and shows us he loves us by meeting our physical needs, like by giving us food. What are some ways you show your love to each other as a family?
2- Since God gave you your family, who could you thank (in addition to the family members) for those loving acts that meet your needs?
(Hint: God!)
3- What is one of your favorite foods that would be special to enjoy as part of a meal this Easter season?
Practice—Eat to Believe
1- Enjoy a special meal with family or friends, asking that Christ’s resurrection would provide you joyful, restful peace even as the meal provides you delight and satisfaction for your physical hunger.
2- Come to Lord’s Supper expectantly this Sunday and throughout Easter season, asking the Lord ahead of time to make the truths of his preached Word become more deeply experientially known in the meal than they would be without it.
